3:10 to Yuma

Well, it seems it was a good thing to watch a movie after all. I watched 3:10 to Yuma today and what can I say about it? It’s simply astonishing. I don’t have any problem to say I love westerns ’cause I grew up watching some of the best movies ever. I don’t have favorites, but Young Guns, Unforgiven and Silverado are some of the first ones I watched when I was younger and I loved Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns. But the fact is, if the movie has a good story to tell and great actors showing all their talent on the screen, there’s no problem for me. I simply watch it and enjoy it.

I have already heard about 3:10 to Yuma for the first time some weeks ago when I discovered it’s a Delmer Daves‘ remake starred by Glenn Ford (who doesn’t remember Clark’s adoptive father on Superman The Movie?) and Van Heflin.

Okay, it’s not the fact it’s a Delmer Daves’ remake that made me watch it, especially because I’ve never heard about him. I just made my homework here, right? I decided to watch it because it’s a James Mangold movie starred by Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Mangold is the man behind of many good movies as Girl, Interrupted, Identity and Walk the Line. And what can we say about Crowe and Bale? They’re simply two of the greatest actors of their generation! So, the movie didn’t surprise me. I knew what it was coming on. Put these two great actors together, a brilliant director and a very smart screenplay then you have an extraordinary movie. That’s all we have here.

The plot is quite simple. Ben Wade (Crowe) is an outlaw cowboy that is a complex combination of savagery and altruism, and it’s not difficult to people start to like him as much of Bale’s character. As one of the greatest actors of our time, Crowe is perfect in his role. And we simply forget what midia says about Crowe. He’s great. Bale, in another hand, is Dan Evans, a broke rancher with wife and kids who just wants to do the right thing. Their destinies are entwined when Wade’s gang arrives at Bisbee and Dan becomes volunteer to conduit him to the train station to Yuma. But it’s not that simple, ’cause Wade’s gang will do anything to rescue it’s boss.

One of the greatest surprises in the movie is Ben Foster’s character. He steals the scene in many moments as Charlie Prince, one of the Wade’s gang member. He’s as crazy as a great shooter. If you don’t remember, Foster is also known as Warren/Angel from X-Men: The Last Stand. He makes a great job on Alpha Dog too. Not so different from what he makes here, on 3:10 to Yuma.

Well, it’s a great film, with a good story which still works in our time, with great actors, and I recommend it to anyone.
