Lego Goes To The Movies

There are many great things you can do with Lego: build spaceships; model a fortress for your hamster; stick pieces up your nose so that your mum has to take you to the hospital and then, again, inform you that you’re now 28 and it’s just not cute anymore. But, the best thing you can do with them, if you have a lot of time on your hands, is make movies.

The finest example I’ve seen recently of this particular micro-movie phenomenon is the Dark Knight trailer entirely constructed from themed plastic. You’ve probably seen it before, but it’s worth watching again below.

This little bit of toy genius lead me on a time-wasting quest for the best Lego movies on the internet. And by ‘internet’ I mean ‘Youtube’. I have narrowed it down to these five.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Even if it does cheat a bit by adding animation to the Lego faces, the choreography alone is really quite jazzy.

The Phantom Menace

The Duel of the Fates battle. I like when they do backflips.

The Thing

Grainy as hell, but excellent use of changing heads. Really making the most of the medium there.

300

Someone really put the hours in on this one. My favourite part is when Darth Maul turns up. Good Lego 6-pack work too.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Unequivocally my favourite. This was even made before the existence of Indiana Jones Lego. The animation is spectacular and it even has a very amusing coda.
